About our Academy

We invite you to come and check out one of our classes!

The Derderian Academy was founded in 1993. We are located at 1478 Atwood Ave in Johnston, RI.  (we are in the plaza next to the CVS) We have an extremely clean, 2600 sq ft facility with two separate training rooms with hardwood floors.

Students at Derderian Academy are all friendly and work together to improve each other in the martial arts. Adults (over 18 years old) may choose to train in either our JKD, Kempo or Filipino Martial Arts classes. The choice depends on your personal goals and we are happy to help you determine which program will best suit your needs. We also have an excellent children's Kempo program.

Students enroll in ONE program only.

For detailed information about each program, check out our programs page.

What is our philosophy?

"We take our martial arts seriously in our academy. I started training in 1973 and have seen lots of great and not so great instructors in the years since then. When I decided to start teaching on my own in 1993, I wanted to make sure I didn't repeat some of the mistakes I'd seen over the years.

There are two philosophies that are most important to us here at Derderian Academy.

"We want our students to be the best martial artists they can be."

"The meaning of Black Belt is very special to us."

Classes are structured, and the students are expected to perform the best that they can. We do not "give" belts away. Each student is judged according to their own individual abilities. No one is asked to do anything that is dangerous or beyond their limit.  When class is over, students leave feeling great. Our retention is pretty high so I know what we are doing is working."

"We are honored every time someone chooses our academy as the one to study at. It is a responsibility we take seriously and constantly strive to be worthy of. Whether you want to begin martial arts training for self defense, exercise, or to develop discipline and self confidence, we do our best to make sure you attain your goal."
